The diagnostics software, which is installed with HP-UX
11i v3, consists of two product bundles:
These bundles include many tools to help verify, troubleshoot,
and monitor PA-RISC and Itanium-based system hardware such as processors,
memory, power supplies, fans, interface cards and mass storage devices.
The OnlineDiag bundle includes the following
tools:
Support Tools Manager (STM)
STM provides
access to a complete set of support tools for use in verifying and
troubleshooting system hardware. STM also provides a a set of daemons
that proactively monitor the system for errors. This information is
used by the EMS Hardware Monitors.
EMS Hardware Monitors
EMS hardware monitors
help detect unusual activities, such as events, occurring on various
hardware resources, thereby preventing hardware failure. Monitors
also provide information about events that provide recommended solutions
to hardware.
The SysFaultMgmt bundle includes the System
Fault Management (SFM) software. The SFM software includes the following
tools:
SFM Providers
SFM monitors the health
of HP servers and retrieves information about hardware such as memory,
processors, power supplies, and cooling devices. SFM operates in the
Web-based Enterprise Management (WBEM) environment.
EVWEB
EVWEB is packaged with SFM and can
be used to view and administer WBEM indications generated on the HP-UX
11i v3 system.
EMT
EMT enables you to view most errors
that can occur on HP-UX 11i v3 systems. It also provides probable
cause for errors, and recommended actions.

 | CAUTION: Removing the OnlineDiag bundle or the SysFaultMgmt bundle, or both, prevents products with dependencies
on the diagnostics from functioning correctly. If the OnlineDiag bundle or the SysFaultMgmt bundle are not installed,
protections from some hardware failures are removed. Without these
bundles installed on your system, it is much harder to troubleshoot
and fix problems when a hardware failure occurs. To ensure the reliability
of your computer system, HP highly recommends that you install the OnlineDiag and SysFaultMgmt bundles
with HP-UX 11i v3. With a media install, the OnlineDiag and SysFaultMgmt bundles are installed by default
with any HP-UX 11i Operating Environment. |

The following lists the uses of tools contained in OnlineDiag and SysFaultMgmt bundles:
Protects your system from hardware failures, for example,
memory problems.
Includes EMS Hardware Monitors that notifies you of
hardware events.
Maintains logs that help you determine the cause of
failures.
Enables you to troubleshoot system problems with the
system online.
Starting with the HP-UX 11i v3 March 2008 release, upon a successful
OE upgrade, SFM is the default monitoring system
for monitoring the core hardware components. Online Diagnostics,
which is included in the OnlineDiag bundle, is
shut down as soon as an OE upgrade is initiated. Upon the successful
completion of the OE upgrade, SFM is the default
monitoring system. However, STM, which is included
in the OnlineDiag bundle, restarts and continues
to function properly.
The SFMIndicationProvider, which is included
in the SysFaultMgmt bundle, replaces certain
EMS Hardware Monitors. However, you can continue to receive all the
events from the remaining EMS Hardware Monitors through the EMS framework.
Indications generated by the SFMIndicationProvider can be directed to the EMS framework through the WBEM Wrapper Monitor.
For information on the monitors that the SFMIndicationProvider replaces, and for instructions on how to switch to the EMS monitoring
mode, see the SFM Release Notes available at:
http://docs.hp.com/en/diag.html

EMS Hardware Monitors through the EMS framework. Indications generated
by the SFMIndicationProvider can be directed
to the EMS framework through the WBEM Wrapper Monitor. |

To switch to Online Diagnostics for monitoring the core hardware
components, you must switch from the SFM mode to the EMS mode. To
switch to the EMS mode, enter the following command at the HP-UX prompt:
# /opt/sfm/bin/sfmconfig -w -e
For more information about the sfmconfig command,
see sfmconfig(1).
For more information on SFMIndicationProvider, see the SFM Administrator's and User's Guide at:
http://docs.hp.com/en/diag.html
On most systems, no special configuration of Online Diagnostics
is necessary. For complete information, see the Online
Diagnostics Administrator's Guide available at:
