The TrueType fonts in the X Window System will be available only through X Font Server, xfs. Refer to “X Font Server Configuration” to start X Font Server.

X Font Server Configuration

For your remote clients, prepare a font server to provide font service. Edit /etc/rc.config.d/xfs on your font server as shown below and then set up your local host.

RUN_X_FONT_SERVER=1

This enables the X font server to start at system boot. To start the X font server immediately, run the following command:

# /sbin/init.d/xfs start

Please refer to xfs(1) for more information.

The following is an example in a case where the server provides service at port number 7000 (default):

xset fp+ tcp/server_hostname:7000

xset fp rehash

User Defined Character Configuration

For configuring bitmap data based User Defined Character (UDC), X11-based UDC editor, xudced(1) is provided. The tool allows users to create UDC bitmap data via X11 GUI. Created UDC data file can be configured for X11 display using udcc(1) command, and for printing using -oudc option. Please refer to man page udc(4) for more details. For printing, a UDC file can be a personal default UDC by placing the file as $HOME/.nlio_udc. Also, system-wide default UDC file can be placed at /var/asx/udc/sys.udc.

For configuring a user selected TrueType font into the system, ttinstall(1) command is provided as Japanese enhancement. The TrueType fonts can be used via X font server after it is installed with ttinstall(1) command. For more details, please refer to JSE Users Guide.
